Who needs a check
DBS checks are for people whose role involves regular work with children or adults at risk, such as junior coaches, coxing coaches and some volunteers. Not every club member needs one. British Rowing's safeguarding guidance sets out which roles count.
How checks are arranged
In rowing, checks are normally started by the club welfare officer through British Rowing's systems rather than arranged individually. British Rowing's guidance also sets how often checks should be renewed, so expect a renewal cycle rather than a one-off.
What clubs struggle with
- Knowing who has a current check, and who is waiting for one.
- Spotting renewals before they lapse.
- Keeping certificate details private: they are sensitive personal data.
How BoatLog helps
BoatLog keeps a qualifications register where the welfare officer records each DBS check with its date and expiry. Reminders go out before it lapses, and any uploaded evidence is visible only to the roles that need it. BoatLog records the check. It does not carry it out: that still goes through your welfare officer and British Rowing.
