Cold water shock and winter rowing: a club safety guide
A capsize in winter is a different event from a capsize in July. A few simple club rules make the difference.

What cold water does
Sudden immersion in cold water causes a gasp reflex and rapid breathing (cold water shock) in the first minutes, then a loss of strength in the hands and arms, and only later hypothermia. Most of the danger is in the first few minutes, which is why getting out of the water quickly matters more than anything.
Simple winter rules
- Restrict small boats and less experienced scullers when the water is cold.
- Stay closer to the bank and to the boathouse.
- Make sure launch cover and throw lines are available where the club requires them.
- Dress in layers that still let you move, and keep dry kit at the boathouse.
- Always sign out, with a realistic return time.
Where the official guidance is
RowSafe covers cold water and hypothermia, and British Rowing offers a short free online course on the topic through its RowHow learning platform. Check both for the current detail.
How BoatLog helps
BoatLog's safety flag lets the club say "amber: no singles" once and have every member see it at sign-out. Because every outing is signed out with a return time, a sculler who has not come back is flagged quickly rather than noticed at lock-up.

Questions
FAQ
Is it safe to row in winter?
Many clubs row all year. Cold water raises the stakes of a capsize, so clubs usually add winter rules: restricting small boats, staying close to the bank and making sure safety cover is available.
What is cold water shock?
An involuntary gasp and rapid breathing on sudden immersion in cold water. It is most dangerous in the first minutes, before hypothermia sets in.
Does British Rowing have cold water guidance?
Yes. RowSafe covers cold water and hypothermia, and British Rowing has a free online course on the subject.
